Managing High-Conflict Families After A Divorce This workshop is being offered at the Suffolk County Bar Association on Friday, Feb. 1st, from 12:30 to 3:15. Program Description: Some parents who have engaged in high conflict litigation over the custody and visitation issues have difficulty implementing their parenting plan. They continue a pattern of acrimony and dissension that is potentially detrimental to their own self interests and the interests of their child(ren). We will discuss how to contain this conflict and teach parents to resolve their conflicts independently of the Court. Our focus will be on parenting coordination and other approaches. While these approaches are primarily used post-divorce they can be used during a divorce once a parenting plan is in place. We will look at high-conflict families from the perspective of attorneys, judges, and specially trained mental health professionals. The following issues will be discussed: the legal basis for these approaches, current case-law, the need for judicial review, and when these approaches are appropriate and when caution should be used. We will also examine when parenting coordinators overstep their bounds. Faculty: Robert Cohen, Esq., Referee Buetow, Neil S. Grossman, Ph.D., and Steve Schlissel, Esq.
