Jacquelyn O’Neil, Esq. currently serves as a Law Clerk for the Honorable Joseph Bianco, United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She was previously an associate in the Commercial Litigation department at Moritt Hock & Hamroff LLP. Ms. O’Neil received her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Loyola College and her Juris Doctor from Touro Law Center, where she graduated summa cum laude, in May 2010. Upon graduation Ms. O'Neil received the award for Exemplary Contributions to the Quality of Student Life. During law school, she was a member of the Moot Court Honor Society where she placed first in the Annual Bainbridge Moot Court Competition and served as the Research Editor during the 2009-2010 academic year. Ms. O’Neil was also a member of the Women's Bar Association and the Real Estate Law Society. During the 2008-2009 academic year she served as the Vice President of the Real Estate Law Society. In addition, Ms. O’Neil interned for the Honorable Kenneth A. Davis of the Nassau County Supreme Court and the New York State Office of the Attorney General. She is admitted to practice in New York State, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York and the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. She remains active with the Touro Law Center community through judging Moot Court competitions and helping to mentor students.

Touro Law Center will hold its 2011 “With Liberty & Justice For All” Dinner on Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, 6:30 p.m. at the Garden City Hotel. This year’s celebration with honor the inaugural class of Touro Law Center’s Builders Society. The Builders Society was created to recognize and celebrate those individuals who have been and continue to be an integral part of the Touro Law Center Community. The Law Center was founded in 1980 in Manhattan, and moved to Huntington in 1982. In January of 2007, Touro Law Center moved into its new building located on a campus working with and adjacent to both the federal and state court houses in Central Islip. This new location has enabled Touro Law to expand the classroom into the courtroom and broaden the spectrum of legal education today. Our innovative Court Collaborative program is thriving, our in-house clinics continue to help members of the surrounding communities and our William Randolph Hearst Public Advocacy Center is helping legal advocacy groups and those they serve. The Builders Society honors those individuals who have helped us to both develop and realize the dream of becoming a truly integrated law campus.

Subjects include animal ownership laws, rules and regulations, licensing, what to do when involved in a dog bite case, what to do if you purchase a sick pet, veterinary malpractice, ways to economize on pet care and still get the very best, animal abuse laws pending in Congress (NYS, federal and on Long Island), how you can adopt any breed and/or age you want, Q&A and so much more. Reservations suggested but walk-ins welcome. The seminar is complimentary BUT donations of blankets, towels and other linens (used but clean), as well as pet toys, for shelter animals, are VERY MUCH appreciated since shelter dogs lie on concrete, often suffering sores, unless volunteers bring (and clean) blankets to lie on and toys to occupy the lonely hours.

Touro Law Center tragically lost an esteemed graduate Susan M. Dietrich Clyne, class of 1988, on September 11, 2001. This golf tournament honors her memory. All proceeds benefit the Susan M. Dietrich Clyne Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Kenneth P. LaValle , '87 named June Alum of the Month

Kenneth P. LaValle, (R-C-I, Port Jefferson) was first elected to the New York State Senate in 1976 and was appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on Higher Education in 1979. Senator LaValle has helped shape higher education policy in New York State for more than 30 years where his work with education leaders at the State University of New York, City University of New York and independent colleges has earned him the respect of the academic community.

In 2007, the Governor appointed Senator LaValle to the New York State Commission on Higher Education which was charged with identifying ways of improving the quality of higher education in the State. Senator LaValle also served on the National Council of State Legislatures’ Blue Ribbon Commission on Higher Education whose goal was to create awareness among State Legislatures of their role in providing accessible and affordable public higher education.

Senator LaValle's achievements in education and higher education are matched by a distinguished record in health care and he is most proud of his work in establishing a Burn Unit at Stony Brook University Medical Center. His legislation to protect and advance the rights of patients earned him special recognition from the Suffolk County Breast Health Partnership. St. Charles Hospice also paid tribute to his efforts in developing a program for terminally ill patients in nursing homes. His commitment to quality health care is continued in his efforts to create an east end hospital alliance, ensuring continued access to vital health services on eastern Long Island. The Honorable Lynn Kotler, '91 named May Alum of the Month

Touro Law Center's Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Communications is proud to announce that The Honorable Lynn Kotler, ’91 has been selected as the alum of the month for May 2011.

Lynn Kotler has been a judge in the Manhattan Criminal Court since 2010. Judge Kotler was elected to the Civil Court bench in November 2009 and has been assigned to Criminal Court in both the Bronx and Manhattan. Judge Kotler is currently a member of the New York City Bar Association, New York County Lawyers Association, the Lesbian and Gay Law Association for Greater New York (“LeGaL”) and is on the Board of Directors for the Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert ("JALBCA").

Prior to serving on the bench, Judge Kotler practiced law for seventeen years in both small firms and as a solo practitioner, maintaining a general civil litigation practice that focused on matrimonial and family law, real estate, wills and estates and personal injury. Her legal experience has been extremely varied. She represented clients from different walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds. Her practice always included a pro bono component, to help those who would otherwise be unable to afford legal services. In addition, Judge Kotler spent over a decade volunteering as an arbitrator for both the New York City Small Claims Court and the Better Business Bureau, where she heard and settled cases. She was also a Special Master in the Supreme Court, New York County where she worked closely with lawyers and litigants in preparing discovery orders, conducting conferences and facilitating settlement conferences. Richard Weber '90 named April Alum of the Month

Richard Weber was appointed as Deputy Chief of the Investigation Division and Chief of the Major Economic Crimes Bureau on April 5, 2010. From March 2005 through March 2010, Mr. Weber served as Chief, Asset Forfeiture and Money Laundering Section, Criminal Division, United States Department of Justice. Mr. Weber is a veteran white collar-crime prosecutor with national and international involvement in some of the nation's most complex financial crime prosecutions. At the Justice Department, Mr. Weber oversaw prosecutions against major domestic and international financial institutions and corporations, including the federal portion of the Credit Suisse and Lloyds investigations, Union Bank of California, American Express Bank International, BankAtlantic, E Gold Ltd. (an internet-based digital currency business), and Sigue Corporation (a global money service business). Under Mr. Weber’s leadership, AFMLS was responsible for more than $2 billion in asset forfeiture.

2011 Howard A. Glickstein Civil Rights and Public Policy Lecture

In 2009, Touro Law Center created the Howard A. Glickstein Civil Rights and Public Policy Lecture in honor of Dean Emeritus Howard A. Glickstein. The inaugural lecture was held in November 2009. This year's lecture will be delivered by former Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, Marsha Ternus.

The event will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 starting at 6 p.m. at the Law Center. The evening will begin with a Wine & Cheese reception with the lecture by Marsha Ternus, former Chief Justice of the Iowa Supreme Court, to follow. Annual Black Law Students Association Dinner Dance

The National Black Law Students Association of Touro Law Center will be holding their Annual Dinner Dance on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the Terrace on the Park, located at 52-11 111th Street in Queens, New York. This year's keynote speaker will be former Governor David A. Paterson. Mr. Paterson served as New York's 55th governor from 2008-2010, the first African American to hold that position. Mr. Paterson worked in the Queens DA's Office and on the staff of the Manhattan Borough President, then was elected to the New York State Senate, rising to the position of Minority Leader. Then-New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer selected him as his Lieutenant Governor running mate in the 2006 gubernatorial election. They were elected in November 2006, and Paterson took office as Governor following Spitzer's resignation in 2008. Mr. Paterson is currently teaching at NYU.

Accepted Student Reception: On Wednesday, March 23, 2011, Touro Law Center will be hosting an Accepted Students Reception starting at 6:30 p.m. Alumni volunteers are needed to meet with accepted students during this reception. Alumni are seated at tables with accepted students based upon the alum's area of practice and student interest. The reception will conclude at 8 p.m.

Intra-School Negotiation Competition: The Alternate Dispute Resolution Society will be holding the preliminary rounds of their intra-school Negotiation Competition on Thursday, March 24, 2011 starting at 5:30 p.m. Alumni volunteers are needed to help judge the competition. In the competition, two–person student teams, each representing a different party, will attempt to negotiate a resolution of a hypothetical dispute. The students’ performances will be judged on criteria used in the American Bar Association (ABA) student negotiation competitions.

Daniel T. Lukasik is an attorney from Buffalo, New York and listed in the publication The Best Lawyers in America. Dan suffers from depression and is the creator of the national website and blog Lawyers with Depression (http://lawyerswithdepression.com/). He will speak about his struggles with depression as a practicing attorney, why those in the legal profession suffer from depression at twice the national rate and what we can do about it.

Marjorie A. Silver is a Professor of Law at Touro Law Center and member of the Board of Trustees of the New York State Lawyer Assistance Trust. Professor Silver will speak about her personal experience with major clinical depression and the support available to lawyers, law students and their families through state and local Lawyer Assistance Programs.

Andrew Sparkler is the President of the Dave Nee Foundation (http://www.daveneefoundation.com/). He is speaking on behalf of the Dave Nee Foundation's "Uncommon Counsel" program. Uncommon Counsel seeks to educate law students about both the prevalence of depression in law school as well as available treatment options. It also encourages the development of symbiotic, nurturing relationships among law students in an effort to reduce the stigma of depression.

Carol Ryder is a busy solo practitioner but finds time to work with projects and/or issues close to her heart. She is an active member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, volunteering with several pro bono projects, including the Pro Bono Foreclosure Settlement Project, and remains engaged with Touro Law Center in a number of ways, including judging student competitions, conducting seminars on animal law, mentoring students, and sponsoring students interested in satisfying their Public Interest Law Perspective by working on cases involving underdogs. Honorable Merik Aaron ’92 Named December 2010 Alum of the Month

Honorable Merik Aaron is the Principal Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of Hempstead. He was recently elected in 2010 as judge to the Nassau County Family Court and will be sworn in on December 14^th to start on January 3^rd. He was endorsed by Republican, Conservative, Independence, and Tax Revolt Parties. He was also endorsed by CSEA Local 1000, Court Officers’ Benevolent Association of Nassau County, Inc. (COBANC), Grand Council of the United Emerald Societies, Inc., Nassau County Police Benevolent Association (PB), Superior Officers Association of Nassau County, Detectives Association of Nassau County, Nassau Police Conference, Inc., New York State Fraternal Order of Court Officers (FOCO), Adjunct Faculty Association of Nassau Community College, Enterprise Association of Steamfitters – Local Union 638 - UA AFL-CIO, and United Food Commercial Workers International Union, CLC. In 2006, the Governor of the State of New York nominated Merik R. Aaron to fill an interim vacancy on the Nassau County Family Court.

This nomination followed a finding by the Governor’s non-partisan judicial screening committee that he was “highly qualified” for appointment to the Family Court Bench. On June 20, 2006, his nomination was confirmed by the New York State Senate with Deputy Majority Leader Senator Dean Skelos placing his name in nomination. Judge Aaron lost the election in 2006 and returned to his former positions as Principal Deputy Town Attorney for the Town of Hempstead, Village Attorney for the Incorporated Village of Hewlett Harbor and private law practice.

Harris Zakarin, a successful litigation attorney with an expertise and concentration in appellate practice, is a partner with the firm of Rivkin Radler. HNBA-Prudential Fellowship Program

The Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA) is pleased to announce a partnership with Prudential Financial, Inc. (Prudential) to provide a meaningful fellowship opportunity to a highly-motivated recent law school graduate. Through this partnership, HNBA will select a recent law school graduate to join the Prudential Law Department as the HNBA-Prudential Law Fellow. Eligible candidates are 2009 or 2010 law school graduates. Deferred associates or other individuals with pending offers from a law firm or other employer are not eligible. The top three finalists selected for an interview at the Prudential headquarters in Newark, NJ will be eligible for travel expense reimbursement.

The Fellow will work full-time for 18 months in Prudential's Newark, NJ, offices beginning on December 1, 2010. During this time, the fellow may work in up to three Law Department divisions, which may include the Insurance, Investments, Litigation/Regulatory, Corporate Governance, Mergers & Acquisitions, Employment & Labor, Employee Benefits and International divisions. The Fellow will be paid an annual salary of US$60,000 with benefits. Employment and compensation is determined and provided solely by Prudential. The Fellow will be expected to seek employment outside of the Prudential Law Department after the end of the fellowship.

The Fellow's responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following: executing legal transactions; securing, preparing, drafting, and processing legal documents; undertaking legal research; litigation support; and other special projects. The Fellow shall assist attorneys in providing legal advice to internal clients on a daily basis.

Alternate Dispute Resolution Society’s Intra-School Client Counseling Competition

**Volunteer judges and clients needed**

On Thursday, October 7, the Touro Law Center Alternative Dispute Resolution Society will hold their intra school Client Counseling Competition from 5:30 p.m. until approximately 8 p.m. at the Law School in Central Islip. The Client Counseling Competition provides students with an opportunity to develop the skills they will utilize in practice. The Competition simulates a law office consultation in which two person law student teams, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. The students conduct an interview with a person playing the role of the client and then explain to the client how they would recommend proceeding further in the hypothetical situation. Each team is given forty-five minutes to conduct a client interview and a post-interview self analysis. While the judges are present during the interview and self-analysis, they do not interact with the students teams. The teams are judged on ten different criteria including, understanding the client’s goals and objectives, problem analysis, effective counseling, the client’s informed choice, and post interview reflection.

Our Mentor Programs are designed to provide students with an opportunity to meet our outstanding alumni and learn about an area of law they are interested in pursuing to expands a student's legal education.

Violet E. Samuels '99 Named September Alum of the Month

     Touro Law Center's Office of Development, Alumni Relations, and Communications if proud to announce that Violet Samuels has been selected as the alum of the month for September. Ms. Samuels is a leader in her profession, was an active member of the Touro Law community while attending law school, and remains engaged with the law school through the Alumni Council and Alumni Mentor programs. Her accomplished career is highlighted in the bio below. On behalf of the entire law school community, we extend our congratulations to Ms. Samuels.
     Violet Samuels attended Borough of Manhattan Community College from 1977-1980, where she graduated with an AAS with honors. In the summer of 1980, she entered City College, School of nursing where she graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Nursing in 1983. She received her Masters in Nursing Administration from New York University in 1990.
     Ms. Samuels worked as a Registered Nurse in multiple units and intensive care units in New York Hospital Cornel Medical from 1983 to 1999. She also worked full time (12-hour shifts), every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday as a Burn Nurse in the Burn Intensive Care Unit at New York Hospial Cornel Medical from 1995-1999.
     In January 1989, she started a home care nurse's agency which operated as an employment agency for health care professionals. To date, the agency sent out over 2000 health care workers. In 2005, she suspended services in the agency due to construction which went over schedule.
     While attending Touro Law School as a part-time day student, Ms. Samuels was a member of the Touro Law Review and was the PDP teaching assistant for Professor Post's Contracts II class. She was also the LEAP teaching assistant for Criminal Law.

The Board of Governors, chaired by Howard M. Thomas O'Connor is a partner in the Real Estate Group with the firm of Cooley LLP, in the business department. He serves as Chair of the Real Estate Group, Co-Chair of the Latin American Real Estate Group and Co-Chair of the Structured Real Estate Investments Group. Mr. O'Connor joined Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman LLP in 1997, which was merged into Cooley Godward Kronish LLP in 2006. He is resident in the New York office.

Mr. O'Connor practices in the area of commercial real estate transactions with particular emphasis on real estate finance, acquisitions and sales. He has extensive experience with both the lender and borrower side of real estate lending (including the origination, workout and restructuring of real estate debt). He represents several major institutional lenders and borrowers in originating and restructuring mortgage and mezzanine financing and in structuring preferred equity investments.

Thomas O'Connor is a partner in the Real Estate Group with the firm of Cooley LLP, in the business department. He serves as Chair of the Real Estate Group, Co-Chair of the Latin American Real Estate Group and Co-Chair of the Structured Real Estate Investments Group. Mr. O'Connor joined Kronish Lieb Weiner & Hellman LLP in 1997, which was merged into Cooley Godward Kronish LLP in 2006. He is resident in the New York office.

Prior to joining Kronish Lieb, Mr. O'Connor worked in the real estate group of Weil Gotshal for eight years. Mr. O'Connor was a high school teacher for ten years before becoming a lawyer.

Mr. O'Connor earned his J.D. in 1989 from Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, where he was Valedictorian and editor of the Touro Law Review. He is a member of Touro Law Center’s Alumni Council and volunteers for programs and events for Touro Law students. He graduated in 1979 from Clark University with a B.S. in History with honors.

Mr. O'Connor is a member of the British American Business, Inc. and a member of the New York Executive Council's Financial Services Advisory Board. CLE Program - The Immigration Reform Debate: Getting Beyond the Rhetoric

Touro Law Center and the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association present "The Immigration Reform Debate: Getting Beyond the Rhetoric" Continuing Legal Education Program on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from 6:00-9:30 p.m. at the Law Center in Central Islip.

This CLE program, worth three CLE credits, will provide an overview of Immigration Law and analyze the constitutionality of the recently enacted Arizona Law and other state and local laws designed to address immigration related issues. It will also explore the practical realities, limitations and misconceptions faced in addressing immigration related issues.

Thomas R. Suozzi, former Nassau County Executive, will be the featured speaker. Local judges, lawyers and law professors will also share their expertise in issues relating to immigration law.

Donna Wanser '98 Named July Alum of the Month

Touro Law Center''s Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Communications is proud to announce that Donna Wanser has been selected as the alum of the month for July. Ms. Wanser is a leader in her profession, was an active member of the Touro Law community while attending law school, and remains engaged with the law school.

Donna is currently the Vice President of Legal at Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. She has been with the company for nearly ten years, starting with one clerk and now overseeing a department of 24 - including six lawyers. Her legal practice has evolved from specializing solely in real estate to a more broad scope of corporate work including labor/employment law, corporate contracts, managing litigation, etc. In addition to assisting with legal counsel on transactional and employment and labor issues, she has been instrumental in bringing Panda''s real estate legal services to a heightened level of proficiency as well as expanding the License/Franchise practice.

Donna received her B.A. from the University of Maryland and her M.B.A. from Dowling College. During her years at Touro Law, Donna was a member of the International Law Review. Donna is a believer in continuous learning, and she is currently in the dissertation stage of a doctorate program - her dissertation topic is on the emotional intelligence of lawyer leaders and the possible implication in the preparedness in leading the new millennial lawyers.

Loan Repayment Assistance for Prosecutors and Public Defenders

The John R. Justice Student Loan Repayment Program (JRJ) will provide 10 million dollars in loan repayment assistance to state and federal public defenders and state prosecutors who agree to remain employed as public defenders and prosecutors for at least three years.

John Armentano '05 Named June Alum of the Month

Armentano is an associate in the commercial litigation department at Farrell Fritz, focusing his practice on land use and municipal law.

Mr. Armentano is well-versed in all aspects of land use, SEQRA and environmental rules and regulations, including Brownfields and Green Buildings regulations. He has represented clients before various municipal boards, the Pine Barrens Commission and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. He has also held positions as Planner II at the Nassau County Planning Commission; Acting Chairman at the Nassau County Soil and Water Conservation District and as Environmental Planner at a Melville-based engineering and consulting firm.

Mr. Armentano is the Co-Chair of the New York State Bar Association's Land Use, Planning and Environmental Law Committee; a member of the New York League of Conservation Voters and a member of the Nassau County Bar Association Moot Court Advisory Board and Nassau Academy of Law. TLC Community Fund "Tag Sale"

In the past four years, staff, faculty and deans have been committed to help Touro Law students with financial difficulties and it is very rewarding to know that our efforts are really making a difference.

We have helped our students with grants and loans totaling $9,600.00 since the TLC Community Fund began. This money have helped to pay bills, medicine, transportation and many other urgent needs. Our current need is so great that since February 2010 we have helped students in need with up to $1,500 in grants and a few baskets of food donated by faculty and staff.

Our TLC Community Fund Board makes a serious commitment to evaluate each case carefully. Every case that comes to us is reviewed by our members, situations are seriously examined, and a financial grant is given only in extreme circumstances. Many of our students are grateful to have a Loan option, when there is not enough money to pay for gasoline or food, etc., we help until they can get on their feet again. Our students always return their loans on time and are very appreciative.

On Tuesday, April 20 from 10:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. the TLC Community Fund will be hosting a tag sale on the 2nd floor concourse area of Touro Law Center in Central Islip.

Bruce K. Gould Book Award Presented to Ken Gormley - April 21, 2010

Touro Law Center will present the Bruce K. Gould Book Award to Ken Gormley, author of The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs. Starr, on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 starting at 5:30 p.m. The celebration will include a book signing at 5:30 p.m., lecture and award presentation at 6:30 p.m. and a general reception to follow.

The Bruce K. Gould Book Award, named for its benefactor Bruce K. Gould, is presented annually by Touro Law Center to the author of an outstanding publication related to the law, legal profession or legal system. It has become known as one of the most prestigious awards of its kind. Since 1993, it has been presented to many notable recipients, including Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, The Honorable Marvin E. Frankel, Alan M. Dershowitz, and many others.

Gormley’s book, The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs. Starr, was released on February 16, 2010 and has become a best-seller. Gormley is the author of “Archibald Cox: Conscience of a Nation” (Perseus Books, 1997), the authorized biography of one of the leading lawyers and public servants of modern times. The book won rave reviews from leading publications across the country, and won the 1999 Bruce K. Gould Book Award for outstanding publication related to the law. Gormley has published dozens of book chapters and scholarly articles, including pieces in the Stanford Law Review and Michigan Law Review.

Touro Appoints New President and Chancellor

The Board of Trustees of Touro College and Touro University today announced the appointment of Alan Kadish, M.D. as president and chief executive officer, and Rabbi Doniel Lander, son of Touro founder Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, to the position of chancellor. Plans for formal convocation ceremonies will be announced soon.
In succeeding Dr. Lander, Dr. Kadish becomes only the second president in Touro’s history. Dr. Lander founded Touro 40 years ago and led the institution through tremendous growth until his recent passing.

As chancellor, Rabbi Lander’s role will be to perpetuate and preserve the legacy of his father. Presently, Rabbi Lander is dean of the Institute for Advanced Talmudic Studies at Yeshivas Ohr Hachaim, in Queens, a position he will continue to hold.

“We are proud to name Dr. Alan Kadish to succeed Dr. Lander as president and CEO of Touro College, and Rabbi Lander to the post of chancellor,” said Dr. Mark Hasten, chairman of the Board of Trustees, in making the announcement. “In the spirit of our beloved and respected founder, Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander, we wish to ensure the continuity and well-being of future generations at Touro. They will provide strong leadership as Touro College moves forward into this new phase of our development with confidence and vigor.”

Touro is the largest Jewish-sponsored educational institution in the United States. Founded in 1970 as a small men’s college, Touro has expanded broadly since its inception and today educates approximately 17,500 students at 29 schools and colleges in several states and overseas. A pioneer in Jewish education, The Touro system is engaged locally, nationally and worldwide in promoting academic excellence, egalitarian values, tolerance and the well-being of others through quality educational programs and community engagement.

As president and CEO, Dr. Kadish has overall administrative responsibility for the Touro system, which includes numerous colleges in New York, Florida, California and campuses abroad - as well as Touro University California and Touro University Nevada.

“Since he joined Touro last year as senior provost and COO, I have been fortunate to have worked closely with Dr. Kadish, and I have the utmost confidence in his leadership abilities, which are extraordinary,” said Rabbi Lander. “I am deeply grateful that he has embraced the opportunity to apply his energy and enthusiasm to help lead Touro into the next century.”

Said Dr. Kadish: “I am honored to be appointed president and CEO of Touro College by the Board of Trustees, and to have the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of a great leader. I look forward to pursuing Touro’s important mission, and to continuing our tradition of providing quality education to secular and Jewish students across the globe.”

Dr. Kadish stressed the importance of working to help ensure that all students enter the workforce prepared to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive economic climate armed with the skills and resources provided by a Touro education. He also noted that Touro has become an important school for the study of health sciences and said he looks forward to moving Touro’s geographically distinct medical programs into leadership roles in American medicine.

Currently, Touro operates two colleges of pharmacy, three colleges of osteopathic medicine, and graduate schools and colleges in health sciences in several states, including California, Nevada and New York. In December, Touro entered into an agreement to affiliate with New York Medical College, a 150-year-old allopathic medical school in upstate New York. In addition to its health sciences programs, Touro operates numerous other graduate schools in a variety of fields including business, education, psychology, social work, Jewish Studies, and the Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center.

Dr. Kadish joined Touro from Northwestern University in September 2009, as senior provost and chief operating officer. At Northwestern University, he was a prominent cardiologist on the national stage, and served on the faculty and as an administrator for the previous 19 years. He has worked as a teacher, research scholar and scientist, and clinician. He held numerous senior-level administrative positions at Northwestern, and also at the University of Michigan, where he had various appointments prior to joining Northwestern. A prolific researcher and writer, he has written extensively in his field, authoring over 300 peer-reviewed papers and contributing to several textbooks.

He received his M.D. degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University and his postdoctoral medical training at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School, and at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a fellow in cardiology. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology.

Margaret Chan '93 Named March Alum of the Month

Touro Law Center's Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Communications is proud to announce that the Honorable Margaret Chan ’93 has been selected as the alum of the month for March. Margaret Chan is currently a Judge at the Civil Court of New York. She is one of a handful of Asian judges in the State of New York. In Manhattan, there are, to date, two Asian judges of Chinese descent in the Civil Court and one in the Supreme Court.

The initial step that led Judge Chan to her current position as a Judge at the Civil Court of New York was the internship she participated in at the Appellate Court while at Touro Law, which led her to a career at the Appellate Division, Second Department and finally to her current position.

In Civil Court, she adjudicates cases under the monetary amount of $25,000. The Civil Court also gets cases above the jurisdictional amount that are transferred from Supreme Court. The cases before Judge Chan range from breach of contract to no-fault insurance to negligence actions to commercial landlord and tenant disputes and consumer debt cases.

She is among the first Asian American graduates of Touro Law School, the first Chinese American Managing Editor of the Touro Law Review and one of a select few Senior Court Attorneys at the NYS Appellate Division. She received her B.A. from Brooklyn College and her J.D. from Touro Law School in 1993. While attending Touro Law, Judge Chan published a note in the Touro Law Review, was a Teaching Assistant for the Legal Education Access Program (LEAP), a research assistant, involved in the Public Interest Law Organization of Touro (PILOT) and participated in pro-bono work helping Haitian refugees in Miami. She is admitted to the New York State Bar. She previously was an associate, and later, a partner at Gim & Chan, PC before going solo. Prior to her work in the private sector, she was a New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department - Senior Court Attorney.

Today, she still stays in touch with a few professors, attends Touro Law alumni events and also participates in Touro Law Center's Mentor Program.

Criminal Law Socety Presents Program on Death Penalty

Touro Law Center's Criminal Law Society is sponsoring what promises to be a very unusual program on the death penalty. It will take place on Wednesday, March 17th, at 6:30 p.m. at law school in Central Islip, N.Y.

At 6:30 p.m., they will screen the award-winning documentary "ROBERT BLECKER WANTS ME DEAD." This film -- which is riveting and disturbing at the same time -- is about the relationship between New York Law School Professor Robert Blecker, a very thoughtful advocate of the death penalty, and a death row inmate in Tennessee who murdered his four children. The film is an extremely powerful statement of both sides of the issue.

At the end of the documentary, Prof. Blecker will speak -- and defend his position. His talk is entitled, "WHO SHOULD DIE, AND WHY." Ample audience discussion and Q & A will follow.

PR and Marketing for Lawyers CLE Lecture - March 25

On March 25, The Public Relations and Marketing Group (PRMG)’s president and founder, John Zaher, an attorney and Touro Law alum from the class of 1998, will present a CLE lecture, “PR and Marketing for Lawyers,” at Four Seasons Caterers, located at 15 Prospect Street in Southampton. The lecture is from 12:30 to 3:15 p.m. and is being presented by the Suffolk Academy of Law, an accredited provider of New York mandatory continuing legal education. Registration is $65.00 for Suffolk County Bar Association members; $75.00 for non-members. Attorneys will receive two Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credits for ethics and professionalism for this program. The course is appropriate for both newly admitted and experienced attorneys.

The CLE lecture will cover marketing; advertising; press conferences and press releases; public relations; practice development techniques; relationships with existing clients; Web site design, marketing and optimization; professionalism requirements, including an update on New York’s advertising rules; and the impact of blogs and social networking on lawyer marketing.

This program will provide attorneys with strategies to grow their practice while conforming to ethical requirements. In addition, those in attendance will gain practical tips for choosing marketing methods that are suited to their practice, personality and their means.

Nassau County Bar Association Program - March 15

There is so much that the Nassau County Bar Association has to offer you. To that end, we would like to have you join us, as our guest, at an Orientation and Cocktail Party on Monday, March 15, 2010 at 5:15 p.m. so that you can have a tour of Domus, our beautiful, 75-year-old home of the Association, and to learn about the benefits of belonging to this organization. In addition, you will be introduced to some members of our Executive Committee, Board of Directors, and Association Membership committee. Several of our more than 20 staff members will be available to answer your questions, and Quartz Caterers, our on-site dining establishment, will be providing hors d’oeuvres.

In addition, if you choose, you can participate in “Walk Through Supreme Court,” an informative program that will introduce you to court procedures, as well as the judges and staff of the courts. The program begins at 3:30 in the Central Jury Room and ends at our doorstep at 5:15. There is no charge for either program, but reservations are required for both.

ADR Society's Intra School Negotiation Competition

On Wednesday, March 10, 2010 the Touro Law Center Alternative Dispute Resolution Society will hold the preliminary round of the intra school Negotiation Competition from 5:15 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

In the competition, two–person student teams, each representing a different party, will attempt to negotiate a resolution of a hypothetical dispute. The students’ performances will be judged on criteria used in the American Bar Association (ABA) student negotiation competitions. The top four teams from the preliminary round will compete in the final round on Thursday, March 11 from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at the Law School. The top two teams from the final round will represent Touro Law at the ABA Regional Negotiation Competition in the fall of 2010, which will be held at Touro Law Center.

Touro Law Launches New Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Clinic

Touro Law Center has established a new Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Clinic that will serve members of the local community and offer students the opportunity to learn about New York foreclosure law and federal bankruptcy practice. To celebrate the establishment of the clinic, Touro Law is hosting an open house on Thursday, February 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the law school located at 225 Eastview Drive in Central Islip. Please join us to learn more about the program from Dean Raful, Senator Brian X. Foley, who successfully secured major funding for the clinic, and clinical director Leif Rubinstein.

The only legal clinic of its kind in New York State, the Mortgage Foreclosure and Bankruptcy Clinic at Touro Law will allow students to work under the supervision of experienced faculty representing clients in a wide range of legal matters. Through training and weekly seminars, students will negotiate mortgage modifications, appear in New York State Supreme Court at Mandatory Foreclosure Settlement Conferences, research and draft litigation documents necessary for foreclosure defense, assist in the preparation and filing of both Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 bankruptcy petitions and appear at hearings in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

“This clinic is serving both law students and community members,” said Professor Rubinstein. “Local members of the community will have a place to turn and a resource to help them when facing foreclosure and bankruptcy while providing students with hands-on practice skills that will assist them in becoming experienced attorneys.”

Clients for the clinic, which began on January 11, 2010, will come from the local community through referrals and word of mouth. Major funding for this clinic provided by: The State of New York, Office of Senator Brian X. Foley; Suffolk County; Capital One Bank (USA), N.A.; Bank of America. Additional funding provided by Citibank, N.A. and Astoria Federal Savings.

Nassau County Bar Association Program for Haitians Call for Volunteers

The Nassau County Bar Association is running an important program on February 18, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. designed to help Haitians with respect to issues including Temporary Protective Status (TPS).

They are in need of volunteers including those who are able to speak French and Creole. They are looking for non-attorneys who can translate and attorneys who can both translate and volunteer their time.

Robert Kronenberg '03 Named February Alum of the Month

Touro Law Center's Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Communications is proud to announce that Robert Kronenberg ’03 has been selected as the alum of the month for February 2010.

Rob Kronenberg has his own law practice located in Hauppauge, N.Y. which is devoted primarily to the areas of Criminal Defense, Education Law, Civil Service Law, Employment Discrimination, Employment Law and Labor Law. He is a former New York City Police Captain and graduated from Touro Law Center in 2003, magna cum laude, third in his class. While a student at Touro Law, he served as an editor on the Touro Law Review and as a Criminal Law teaching assistant. He received the Oral Advocacy Award and the Award for Academic Excellence in Criminal Law, Torts, Property, Remedies and Criminal Procedure law. He has taken and passed the Bar Examinations of four states on the first attempt. Mr. Kronenberg has lectured extensively for the past 12 years in the following areas: Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure Law, New York State Penal Law and Police Procedures. He is a member of Touro Law Center’s Alumni Council, currently serves as Second Vice President on the Executive Board of the Alumni Association and serves as a mentor for students in Touro Law Center’s Upper-Division and First-Year Student-Alumni Mentor Program. In addition, he has attended a number of receptions for current and accepted students, was a guest speaker for the Boardroom Speaker Series – Student Alumni Roundtable Discussion on criminal law, and helps judge intra-school competitions.

Andrea Callan '07 Named January Alum of the Month

Touro Law Center's Office of Development, Alumni Relations and Communications is proud to announce that Andrea Callan ’07 has been selected as the alum of the month for January 2010.

Andrea Callan is currently an attorney and director of the Suffolk County Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union. In her work with the NYCLU, she focuses on immigration, students’ rights, privacy and security, LGBT rights, racial justice, reproductive rights, and police conduct.

Andrea is the recipient of several awards including “Best Honors Dissertation” for her research and paper titled “The Faces of the Races: A Study of the Changing Images of African-Americans surrounding the Civil Rights Movement;” the Touro Law Center “Service to the Bar Award” for her work promoting American Bar Association programs in law schools throughout New York State; and the Touro Law Center award for “Exceptional Service to the Public & Community” for her service as an executive board member and legal volunteer for the Suffolk County Chapter of the NYCLU, and as president of the Touro Law NYCLU student group.

Andrea continues to participate in programs for students at Touro Law Center and has been a guest speaker for the Public Interest Law Organization of Touro (PILOT).

Touro Law Center’s 16th Annual Goods & Services Auction will be held this year on Wednesday, March 24, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. at the Law Center in Central Islip, New York.

All proceeds from the auction benefit the Touro Summer Public Interest Law Fellowship Program, which fund summer stipends for students to work in public interest law firms or non-profit organizations. These students defend the victims of domestic violence, guard the legal interests of children and help advocacy groups with a broad spectrum of poverty and civil rights issues.

How can I help? You can donate an item to be included in the auction. Items for donation might include gift certificates, artwork, theater tickets, sporting tickets, travel packages, wine, electronics, jewelry or something even more creative. You may also consider a $1,000 Event Sponsorship which includes recognition at the event and in the auction brochure, as well as ten tickets to the auction.

How Does the Auction Work? Donations of artwork, theater tickets, sporting tickets, travel packages, wine, restaurant gift certificates and many other items are sold in both silent and live bidding. Michael Markowitz '89 Named December Alum of the Month

Mr. Markowitz was an active member of the Touro Law Center community while attending law school and remains engaged through Touro Law Center’s Alumni Council. He participates in programs for students, and he volunteers to meet with accepted and current students regularly.

Mr. Markowitz has his own practice in Hewlett, N.Y. focusing in the areas of commercial law, real estate transactions, litigation and contracts. He is admitted to practice law before U.S. Supreme Court, 2nd Circuit Court, U.S. District Courts for New York - Eastern and Southern Districts, and New York State Courts. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association, the Nassau County Volunteer Lawyer’s Project, the Nassau County Bar Association, Vice Chair of the Community Relations and Public Education Committee and the Jewish Lawyers’ Association.

Mr. Markowitz was honored as Pro Bono Attorney of the Year from the Nassau County Bar Association in 1996 and was a citation recipient from the Nassau County Legislature in 1996. He is a New York State Arbitrator for the Nassau County District Court and Nassau County District Court small claims night arbitrator.

Keeping Everyone Safe: Immigration and Law Enforcement on Long Island

Join Long Island Wins and the Long Island Immigrant Alliance for a panel discussion about the relationship between law enforcement and Long Island’s immigrant community from the perspective of researchers, attorneys and law enforcement officers from both Nassau and Suffolk counties. At "Keeping Everyone Safe: Immigration and Law Enforcement on Long Island," experts will discuss how fear of deportation can make undocumented immigrants wary of approaching local police officers and how those issues of alienation can make police work more difficult. Lois Schwaeber '92 Named November Alum of the Month

ADR Society Client Counseling Competition Results

On Tuesday, October 27, the Alternate Dispute Resolution Society held their intra-school Client Counseling Competition. Thirteen student teams competed and the teams of: Brian Shupak and Lisa Catapano; Pallvi Babbar and Bella Borukhova; Brandon Kopcienski and David Adhami; and Dan Wilkens and Tripti Singh advanced to the final rounds which were held on Thursday, October 29. Brian Shupak and Lisa Catapano placed first and Dan Wilkens and Tripti Singh placed second and will go on to represent Touro Law School at the Regional Client Counseling Competition that will be held at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law Yeshiva University, New York, N.Y.

Invitation to Alumni to Participate in a Support Group Project

Last year, we began an exciting project here at Touro Law Center: A monthly pilot support group focused on better self- and interpersonal-awareness. The goal of this group was to help lawyers and law students better serve their clients, people who are often faced with overwhelming legal and other needs. Last year, this opportunity was available to lawyers, paralegals & law students working in PAC, its affiliated organizations and our clinics. Based on that experience, we have decided to make a few adjustments to enhance the success of this enterprise. One change is that we are inviting some Touro Law alumni who provide direct client services to join the group.[1]

We are fortunate that the same two highly qualified and experienced psychotherapists have agreed to join us again as facilitators. Dr. Marlene Kasman has been a clinical psychologist for over 40 years, with a private practice that has included individual, group and family therapy. Dr. Joanne Taylor has been in private practice in clinical psychology since 1993 and is currently working at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Northport as part of the Polytrauma team. Both Dr. Kasman and Dr. Taylor are excited about the opportunity to work with lawyers and others who are coping with the challenges of providing legal services for the underserved citizens of our community.

Given your incredibly busy lives, why participate in this group?

Sharing with others is a good way to find relief for the burdens and imbalances that come naturally from serving clients with challenging legal and/or emotional problems.
Former participants tell us that they have felt refreshed, restored and re-energized after just one one-hour session.

21st Annual Leon D. Lazer Supreme Court Review

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center proudly presents the Twenty-First Annual Leon D. Lazer Supreme Court Review: October 2008 Term Ending June 2009, held at Touro Law Center on Friday, October 30, 2009, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Justice Souter’s last term, after 19 years on the Supreme Court, was marked by numerous significant decisions, one of which – the New Haven Firefighters case – became a focal point for Senate interrogation of Justice Souter’s appointed replacement, Sonia Sotomayor. The Court also avoided a widely expected confrontation with the constitutionality of a key aspect of the Voting Rights Act, with a narrow decision leaving the issue for another day.

The Court rendered many significant decisions pertaining to civil rights litigation, including decisions expanding prosecutorial immunity, modifying qualified immunity procedure, severely limiting claims against prosecutorial supervisory officials, rejecting a right to post-conviction DNA testing, but allowing state court § 1983 suits against corrections officers. The Court found that the strip search of a middle school student violated the Fourth Amendment, but that the school officials were protected by qualified immunity. The court rendered other important decisions under Title VII, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

There was a major decision holding that the Confrontation Clause requires prosecutors who introduce laboratory reports to produce the analyst for cross-examination. The Court also decided important Fourth Amendment issues pertaining to vehicle stops and searches, and the exclusionary rule, and imposed restrictions on the Sixth Amendment right to counsel.

In the business area, the Court decided significant cases concerning federal preemption of state law, and the due process right of recusal of a state judge who accepted unusually large campaign contributions.

These and other decisions will be discussed and analyzed by a highly accomplished faculty of federal court judges, a law school dean and preeminent constitutional and civil rights scholars. This highly successful program is now in its 21st year.

Free PR and Marketing for Lawyers CLE Lecture

On November 5, The Public Relations and Marketing Group (PRMG) will hold its “PR and Marketing for Lawyers” lecture at Trio Restaurant, located at 700 Patchogue-Holbrook Road in Holbrook. The lecture is from 12:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. and is free of charge for attorneys. Attorneys will receive one Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit for ethics and professionalism for this three-hour program. The course is appropriate for both newly admitted and experienced attorneys.

The CLE lecture will be presented by PRMG’s Founder and President, John Zaher '98, an attorney. It will cover marketing; advertising; press conferences and press releases; public relations; practice development techniques; relationships with existing clients; Web site design, marketing and optimization; professionalism requirements, including an update on New York’s advertising rules; and the impact of Web 2.0 concepts — such as blogs and social networking — on lawyer marketing.

ADR Client Counseling Competition Judges and Clients Needed

On Tuesday, October 27, the Touro Law Center Alternative Dispute Resolution Society will hold the preliminary round of the intra school Client Counseling Competition from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Law School in Central Islip.

The Client Counseling Competition provides students with an opportunity to develop the skills they will utilize in practice. The Competition simulates a law office consultation in which two person law student teams, acting as attorneys, are presented with a client matter. The students conduct an interview with a person playing the role of the client and then explain to the client how they would recommend proceeding further in the hypothetical situation. Each team is given 45 minutes to conduct a client interview and a post-interview self analysis. While the judges are present during the interview and self-analysis, they do not interact with the students teams. The teams are judged on ten different criteria including understanding the client’s goals and objectives, problem analysis, effective counseling, the client’s informed choice and post interview reflection. The final round is scheduled for Thursday, October 29 starting at 5:30 p.m. until approximately 8 p.m.

Nassau County’s top women practicing law in private and public firms, the courts, higher education and government will come together for an innovative discussion of the issues that impact women in the legal profession in a special “Women in Law Symposium: Gender Equity Program” on October 21, hosted by the Nassau Academy of Law, the educational arm of the Nassau County Bar Association.

Among the speakers at the event will be newly-appointed Family Court Supervising Judge Hope Zimmerman, Nassau County Court Judge Meryl Berkowitz, Hofstra Law School Dean Nora Demleitner, Touro Law Center Assistant Dean Lauren Chite, Nassau County Attorney Lorna Goodman, Chief Deputy Nassau County Executive Marilyn Gottlieb, and Meyer Suozzi English & Klein Managing Partner Lois Carter Schlissel.

Richard Lopez has his own law office located in Miami, Florida, practicing in the areas of international trade finance, Export-Import bank financing, international business transactions, commercial transactions and real estate transactions. In addition to practicing law, Mr. Lopez is the managing principal of Drake Finance Group, an approved Direct Guaranteed Lender of the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

Mr. Lopez served as the Director of Enterprise Florida (Florida Department of Commerce) and Special Projects Advisor to the Venezuelan-American Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Caracas, Venezuela. He was also a legal consultant during his stint in Latin America and worked for law firms in Brussels, Belgium, Lisbon, Portugal and London, England.

Mr. Lopez remains an active member of the alumni community and participates in programs for students, and volunteers to meet with prospective students at Law School Forums in his area.

New York City Bar Program - "Letting it all Hang Out"

The Association of the Bar of the City of New York is holding a program titled "Letting It All Hang Out: Learning to Better Manage Challenging Lawyer-Client Relationships" on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at the House of the Association, 42 West 44th Street. Do you find yourself feeling overwhelmed by clients’ multiple needs and your limited resources? Do you have clients whose emotional problems challenge your ability to adequately address their legal needs? Do client demands sometimes threaten your own wellbeing? Do you feel that your life is out of balance?

The successful and satisfying practice of law depends on having positive client relationships despite such challenges. Emotional competence, including understanding basic psychological principles and psychodynamic processes, facilitates good relationships. Yet, lawyers traditionally receive little training beyond their technical, analytical skills. For many other professions, supportive supervision of personal skills, sometimes in the form of peer support groups, is an essential element of education and practice. Dr. Jeffrey Sternlieb will introduce how such groups, named Balint groups after the Hungarian-trained psychoanalyst, Michael Balint, have helped medical doctors gain insight into their interactions with their patients, manage stress, and provide peer support and group learning, all to facilitate better medical practice. The program will include a demonstration of how Balint groups accomplish these goals. A panel of experts, including a law professor, a lawyer and a social worker, will explore how similar groups might equip lawyers to better handle the emotional aspects of legal practice.

Hot Topics in the Law Luncheon Program: "The Alleged Rape Incident at Hofstra"

As you may be aware, the Nassau County District Attorney's Office has decided not to file a charge of Making a False Written Statement under Section 210.45 of the New York State Penal Law against the accuser of the five men. We have invited several attorneys from the Nassau District Attorney's Office, including District Attorney Kathleen Rice '91, who have been involved in the matter to join us in this open forum. We are also inviting the Detective who is the commander of the Nassau Police Department's special victims squad and who was involved in the initial arrests of those who were charged with the rape.
